“Poem to My Mother” is an expression of the complex emotions woven into the fabric of the artist’s relationship with my mother: an homage to the strength and sacrifices of motherhood, as well as its succumbence to archaic norms that persist. The sculpture captures the complexities of being raised by a parent whose essence is a blend of tradition and rebellion, acknowledging the profound impact of these dual forces on the evolving narrative of familial bonds.
The elements navigate the resentment in this mother-child experience– the struggle to reconcile individuality and appreciation. The white egg nods the their mother’s tendencies and obsession with Faberge eggs. The egg rests on the wooden base, a bodily sacrifice, cradled as if in a protective embrace but also shrouded from exposure. At the center, a spinning toy brick-block suggests the need and discomfort of motherhood in constantly iterating upon itself– teaching and learning while remaining the principal caretaker. A floating lock of hair evokes the softer, more intimate aspects of motherhood that often go unnoticed, curled by a brick round, which signifies the tension of societal expectations and identity.
